As an educator in New Jersey, Melissa currently works as an educational technology specialist. She has also held positions as a special education teacher and a language arts teacher, and she says that "No matter my title or position, I've always believed that it is not only the ability to read, or the appreciation for reading, but the LOVE of reading that will open the most doors for our students." For this reason and so many more, we are thrilled to have Melissa as part of our #Read4Fun community of readers. Read more about Melissa's love of reading here as she shares with us:
What has been your favorite experience from participating in the #Read4Fun Chat?
The #Read4Fun chat that stands out as a favorite was all about cookbooks! I loved the opportunity to chat with others about their favorite recipes, favorite cookbooks, and share stories.
I started collecting cookbooks a few years ago. At first they were just decorative, but then I started flipping through the pages and actually READING them. I began to appreciate them as so much more than simply a collection of recipes. My collection of cookbooks keeps growing and now represents cuisine from all over the world, old books, new books, shortcuts, and very elaborate recipes.
I think what I love most about the cookbooks is that each one tells a unique story about tradition, culture, heritage, family, friends, and always coming back to the idea of how food -- and books -- can connect us all.

What book or character from a book has most impacted you in your life?
At each stage of my life, different characters have made impressions on me in different ways. One character that resonated a great deal with me and has stayed with me for a very long time is Francie from A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN by Betty Smith. Francie's story reminds us that goodness, beauty, and strength can triumph even through some of life's most difficult circumstances.
How has #Read4Fun influenced you as an educator?
