The International Literacy Association (ILA) is a global advocacy and membership organization of more than 300,000 literacy educators, researchers, and experts across 75 countries. With over 60 years of experience, ILA has set the standard for how literacy is defined, taught, and evaluated. We are honored at #Read4Fun to recognize ILA as a leader in literacy as #ReadingHeroes! What four words describe your #Read4Fun reading identity?
Relaxation through novel experiences.
What book or character from a book has most impacted you in your life?
Personally (rather than speaking for ILA), I have to say the old Peanut comic books by Charles Schulz and Dr. Seuss. When I was young, I had trouble reading at grade level, but I had these books that I could read and enjoy without frustration, and these early experiences developed my love of reading, and that in turn helped me overcome my learning issues. I’m forever grateful to these authors for changing my life.
How has #Read4Fun influenced you as educators and an organization?
If you can get someone to want to read because they enjoy it, you have hooked them on to learning. Any reading experience is a learning experience. But we don’t just want students reading for fun; we want everyone doing it! As an association that “teaches” educators, we want to promote #Read4Fun to make sure people view reading that way: fun. And we also practice what we preach. We’re pretty voracious readers over here!
